Our Lab at the 2025 Annual Symposium on Seismology and Earthquake Science
September 2025
On September 18, members of The Photonic Seismology Lab took part in the 2025 Annual Symposium on Seismology and Earthquake Science, held at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in memory of Dr. Hillel Wust-Bloch. The symposium brought together leading experts to discuss seismology, earthquake mechanics, monitoring technologies, and seismic risk reduction, with a particular focus on the Dead Sea Fault and earthquake preparedness in Israel.
Our laboratory was represented by its head, Dr. Ariel Lellouch, who—together with Nadav Wetzler from the Geological Survey of Israel—presented “Probing the Dead Sea Fault with the first hybrid DAS–accelerometer array in an abandoned well.” In addition, Eyal Shimony delivered a talk on “Wave equation inversion with Distributed Acoustic Sensing.” Both presentations highlighted innovative directions in applying fiber-optic sensing to seismology.
Beyond the scientific sessions, the symposium served as a valuable platform for discussion and exchange. It provided the opportunity not only to reconnect with long-standing colleagues but also to establish new contacts across different institutions and areas of expertise. These interactions are expected to open the door to future collaborations and shared research projects, strengthening the links between our lab and the broader seismological community.
