Kinneret Earthquake Swarm Research Presented at EGU 2026

May 2026

Aleksei Nelaev, a PhD student supervised by Dr. Ariel Lellouch, represented the Photonic Seismology Lab at the EGU 2026 General Assembly in Vienna to present research on the 2018 earthquake swarm in the Sea of Galilee. Co-authored by Eyal Shimony and Dr. Ariel Lellouch, the study details a complex network of intersecting fault segments beneath the lake rather than simple linear structures.

The findings highlight how underground fluid migration can trigger seismic activity in areas previously expected to remain stable. This work was supported by the Israel Science Foundation (Grant 283/25) and the AGU Voices for Science program.

The poster presentation attracted multiple scientists, both from geological and geophysical backgrounds, and sparked a fruitful discussion.
