Field Experiment: Highway 6 Fiber-Optic DAS Campaign at Soreq Interchange
October 2026
Members of our Photonic Seismology Lab recently conducted a field Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) experiment along Highway 6 near the Soreq interchange. By interrogating optical fiber along this major transportation corridor, the campaign leveraged fiber-optic technology to continuously record traffic-induced ground vibrations and ambient noise at high resolution. These dense acoustic recordings open exciting avenues for urban seismology, shallow subsurface imaging, and real-time transportation infrastructure monitoring.
Led by Prof. Ariel Lellouch, the field team included lab members Yana Novomodsky and Aleksei Nelaev, alongside Guy Tzarfati, researcher and staff member in TAU’s Department of Geophysics. Over dedicated field sessions on-site, the team managed interrogator configuration, data acquisition, and operational logistics. We look forward to analyzing the rich continuous datasets gathered during this deployment to further explore traffic-generated wavefields and near-surface seismic imaging!
